PCV in Kenya: Week 20
Monday
I woke up to banging on my window and was very confused at first. I then remembered that Jane was here to do my laundry. Thank goodness for Jane because she has really helped me. When I had settled in for the morning, I got a message that our schools had been postponed until next Monday. It is super exciting to have a week to chill and rest at the house. I took my time cleaning and re-organizing my house and then went to the market around 1PM. I got food and checked on my kitenge dress. The overall fit/look is what I wanted, she will just make a few alterations to it and I can pick it up on Wednesday. I then took some items to school that I had moved to my house over break. I was able to see Principal Richard and Phan there. I was also able to pick up some letters that had come in while I was away. I went back to the market to share a soda with Baba Charles and catch up with him. Around 5PM, I carried everything home. When I got home and started looking for my keys, I realized that they were covered in smashed avocado… I had forgotten I put the avocados in my bag and they were at the very bottom and had gotten smushed on the walk home. After cleaning up this mess, I made cabbage and vegetable stir fry and had this with avocado and egg toast for dinner. As I ate dinner and got ready for bed, I started listening to the audiobook for “A Court of Thorns and Roses”.
Tuesday
I spent the morning organizing the clean clothes that were washed yesterday then ate breakfast and washed dishes. I then opened and organized the contents of the letters I picked up yesterday. I love receiving these 😊 I did a quick workout then gave Nala a bath because it was time to apply a new round of flee and tick medicine to her coat after she dried off. I also successfully gave her the deworming pill which was such a win! I warmed up dinner while watching Monk and called it a day.
Wednesday
Since school was postponed until next week, Jane was able to help me wash all of my bedding today which is a huge task. I then completed my Peace Corps list of items I would want sent to me in case of evacuation. I had fun with this on Canva because I don’t have a lot else to do 😊 I had a great breakfast of avocado and egg toast with pancakes. I then walked to the market and picked up my kitenge dress and juice. I love how the dress turned out! On the way to the market, I saw one of my neighbors working on her farm and she called me over to give me about 20 tomatoes. Over the course of the day, I gave some of these to the tailors, Sammy, and Michael because I will not eat 20 tomatoes before they go bad. Back at the house, I did yoga before heating up dinner. I watched “Glass” to end the night.
Thursday – Warren’s Birthday & Deployment
I spent my free time sending my brother, Warren, a birthday message. He will probably never receive it because he is currently on his deployment flight, but it’s the thought that counts 😊 I spent the rest of the morning doing some vacation research (I know, already). After this, I made fried tomatoes with some of the tomatoes I got from my neighbor yesterday. They turned out pretty ok! Next time I want to add some more spice to the breading, but overall, pretty good. I then walked to the market to pick up some new vegetables and bread and was soon back at home. I cleaned dishes then brought inside all of my bedding that was still outside. I made lentils with vegetables for dinner and had this with avocado toast. It must be avocado season because the market is filled with them which is so nice.
Friday
I got up and worked on a new vacation leave request in the morning. I spent the afternoon in my Eno finishing an orange and yellow Greek wave friendship bracelet, napping, and watching the movie “Reptile”. I worked out before I heated up leftovers then called my dad. When I was about to get in the shower, the tiny bug infestation happened again which is highly unfortunate. This is the worst thing that consistently happens here at my house. There’s nothing I could do about it tonight because they will die by the morning, so I took my shower in the dark (they are attracted to lights) and quickly got into bed. I called Sophie tonight and it was nice to catch up before going to sleep.
Saturday
I had a lazy morning because I did not want to clean up all of the tiny dead bugs from my house. Once I got up, I swept, vacuumed, and mopped every crevice of the house to rid it of the bugs. I watched an episode of “Yellowstone” and the first episode of the “Asunta Case” during my cleaning breaks. When I got to the front door to clean my porch, I also realized that a cow had pooped on my porch, so I had to clean that up too. When I was done cleaning, I called my mom, my dad, my grandpa, and Aunt Rhonda. It was fun to talk to everyone 😊 I had another night of yoga. It has been good to have some time off to get back into an exercise routine. For dinner, I had leftovers again and watched “Suits”. I had to take a break from this show for a while, but I am ready to watch it again! After a quick shower and journal session, I ended my Saturday by watching “Anyone But You”.
Sunday
I started my day off with an episode of “Game of Thrones”. I ate some pancakes for breakfast then did my dishes that had piled up a bit. I spent most of the day learning and working on a new bracelet pattern. It is a version of the Greek wave, but with four colors of string instead of two. Once I was comfortable doing it without the guide, I made popcorn and headed to sit outside in my Eno. I watched an episode of “Suits” and worked on my bracelet. Around 5PM, I did yoga and was able to talk to Kurt. I heated up dinner and started watching “Hillbilly Elegy” before calling it a night.
