PCV in Kenya: Week 38
Monday
Today was the fifth day of the teacher strike so I had another unplanned day at home. I started my day off by watching “House” while eating breakfast. I then spent the rest of my morning making daily itineraries for my November trip. During lunch, I watched “The Mummy”, another movie I wanted to watch because of a location we will be visiting in November 😊 I then walked to the market to purchase vegetables for the week. I also spent time saying hello to all the market mamas. When I got home, I finished making the mountain friendship bracelet before doing a workout. I ended the night by warming up and eating dinner while watching “Law and Order: S.V.U.”.
Tuesday
Today ended the teacher strike. Even though I was able to go to school today, no learning took place because we had a combined 40 students at school (usually there are over 300). Instead of having my usual lessons, I opened and organized the box of books we received from the International Book Project and did some documentation for Peace Corps. I went home shortly after lunch and worked with my camera a bit before doing a workout. I got some fun pictures of Nala 😊 I made dinner and watched “House” while I ate.
Wednesday
I was able to teach lessons today! It was so good to be back with my students. During my downtime today, I read over some of the training materials for next week. I will be working as a resource volunteer starting next week. This means I will be helping to train the incoming volunteers who will be trainees for the next three months. I’m really excited for this opportunity. At school today, I was also able to get teachers signed up for our first teacher technology workshop day tomorrow. I went home in the afternoon and had to jog a bit to beat the rain. I rested a bit before working out and eating dinner. Shockingly, the rain didn’t knock out my power tonight which was a win.
Thursday
Today was a busy day of teaching for me. I have five lessons on Thursdays, the most out of the other days of the week. After lunch, I helped lead our first teacher technology workshop. Today’s lesson was about how to operate a computer. I think it went really well. There are some teachers interacting with a computer for the first time, so it is a great opportunity for all of our teachers to feel more comfortable using technology for themselves so that they can then use it in their teaching. After school, I headed to the market to do some quick shopping before heading home for the day.
Friday
I had another full day of teaching, but all the lessons went really well. I went home during lunch so I could change clothes and bring back our Grassroot Soccer (GRS) materials. When I got back to school, Phanuel and I set up for GRS and then we had our first lesson with our first group of players! I think it was a very successful lesson. I was so proud of how much our players participated and I am excited for the rest of the program with them. I walked home and made a quick dinner while the sky opened up. I again didn’t lose power (twice in one week!) and it was nice to end the day with a warm shower.
Saturday
I began the day by updating some documents for Peace Corps and then headed to school to mark student chemistry and biology books from the week. Since I will be missing some days to assist with Peace Corps training, this will be my new Saturday routine so I can still ensure the students are doing their weekly assignments. I stayed here through lunch then took a matatu to Kalandin to meet Lauren, my new Peace Corps Response neighbor. When I reached her house, she showed me around her place and we chatted for a few hours to get to know each other. It’ll be nice to have a close neighbor! I headed home around 4PM and made dinner when I got home. I ended the night with a facemask 😊
Sunday
I began the day by packing for my trip to the training center tomorrow. I then made pancakes before doing my nails. I had time today, so I went all out on the nail design. They turned out so cute if I do say so myself 😊 I then tidied up the house a bit before working out. I ended the night by eating dinner and watching “House”.
