PCV in Kenya: Week 44
Monday
It was an unexpectedly busy day. I got to school at 8AM and did not have any downtime until I left at 4PM. There were a lot of logistical things to organize for Grassroot Soccer graduation and general end of the year activities. I also collected my students’ end of the year squares. Every year that I have taught, I have given my students the option to write or draw on a small square and I keep these in a scrapbook. I did not carry the scrapbook all the way to Kenya, so I will add these squares and next year’s squares to it when I finish service. I ended the day stapling my biology exams for tomorrow. This took me a good amount of time because the final exam had 11 pages (front & back) to put together. When I left school, I went to the market for vegetables and got a few clothing items. At the house, I did a workout then warmed up and ate dinner. Before going to bed, I made an answer key for the biology exam I stapled today.
Tuesday
I had the morning to myself at the house which was much needed. I made the chemistry exam answer key then did a workout. I then went to Nick’s house to check on the oven and baking materials. Nick is a board member at our school and he has a large house with a full kitchen and a pool. I want to make cupcakes for my GRS graduates, so I wanted to see what baking materials he had at his house. From here, I went to school and administered the biology exam. We then had a GRS lesson and I went home. I made dinner then packed my things for Sosa.
Wednesday
I started the day by moving Nala’s things to Sammy’s house. At school, I administered the chemistry exam. Jack and Mary met me at school and we all got on a matatu for Kisumu. In Kisumu, we ate lunch at Backyard Patio. I hadn’t eaten here in a while and it was delicious. I then went to the bank to open a savings account in preparation for receiving the grant money. This will help keep me organized which I am happy about 😊 From here, I went to the Peace Corps office and checked some items off my list. I picked up medicine refills and our GRS certificates for the players. A Peace Corps car then drove myself and some staff members to Sosa. I showered then went to dinner before playing games with the trainees and calling it a night.
Thursday
Trevor and Michael had their nutrition session in the morning and then we had an education debrief in the afternoon. I was so exhausted today for seemingly no reason, so after dinner, I went to bed 😊
Friday
I started my day with a delicious Sosa breakfast then a Peace Corps car drove me into town. I got dropped at United Mall so I could do grocery shopping before getting on a matatu to go home. The ride went smooth and I got dropped off at school. I collected my exams and informed our GRS players about tomorrow’s practice before going home. At home, I ate dinner then began marking exams. Nala and I had a nice snuggle before I went to bed and it made me happy 😊 It is not common for her to sleep in my lap for a long amount of time. Laura also dropped off many letters from my Dad, Mama Judge, and my grandpa 😊 Reading these letters was a great way to end the night.
Saturday
I woke up and ate a piece of cake from Java House for breakfast. I then went to school to teach our final GRS lesson! I ate lunch at school then headed home where I worked on marking exams until 1AM. I took breaks to eat, shower, and talk to friends. I am on a bit of a time crunch with the marking which is why I worked so hard this afternoon.
Sunday
From the moment I woke up until the moment I went to sleep, I marked papers. I took breaks to eat and another break when a crazy storm came through. Not only did it knock out our power, but the water was coming sideways because of the wind. This meant water was coming through my ceiling and windows. It also hailed and even hail pieces came into my house. Nala was terrified and my feelings were not far behind hers. It was so loud and everything in my house got wet which was really unfortunate. After the storm went away, I mopped my floors and wiped down other surfaces of the house, but there wasn’t anything I could do about the couch cushions or my bedding until the next day.
