PCV in Kenya: Week 29

Monday

I was back at work today. Last week, while I was at Grassroots Soccer training, it was also the midterm break for Term 2 of school. So, everyone was off of school last week. The teacher work room had a new addition of pictures over all of the walls and I am in one of them! I spent the morning organizing myself for the week then taught my two lessons for the day. We learned that End of Term 2 testing will be the last two weeks of school which means that we will only be teaching for two more weeks in Term 2. On the way home from work, I went to the market to purchase my vegetables and I also found a dress from Sarah’s shop 😊 I headed home and ran into Baba Charles and Michael on the way. Back at home, I put away my clean laundry and did some yoga before having dinner. I ended the day with an episode of “The Mentalist”.

Tuesday

Today was one of my most favorite days at work. I wore my new dress from yesterday – it’s always fun to wear a new outfit 😊 I taught my three lessons for the day and they all went well. My students are truly the best. After my lessons, I completed the International Book Project’s second request for information because our school was accepted to receive books! I then finalized a lot of things on the grant proposal and we can hopefully have a meeting this week to complete all the details for submission. I held all of my lessons in the computer lab and also worked in here all day today. It was nice to have some alone time to finish everything I needed to do. When I got home, I chopped veggies for dinner and watched “The Mentalist” while working on a new bracelet. I then did a HIIT workout followed by some yoga. I was hungry after this, so I made veggie stir fry with an avocado and an egg sandwich. I watched more of “The Mentalist” before calling it a day.

Wednesday

I again used the computer lab for my lessons today. It really helps them to see the different things that are in the textbook that they would be unable to see otherwise. Other than my lessons and usual lesson planning, it was a good and uneventful work day. When I got home, I worked on my bracelet then did another HIIT workout. Sammy got himself a kitten! It is so small so we don’t know if it is a girl or boy yet. But, once we know, Sammy said he is going to have me name it😊 After eating dinner, I washed some laundry and dishes. Nala really played outside tonight and I was worried she wasn’t coming home. She came home though like she always does 😊

Thursday – 4th of July!

Today was another 4th of July spent out of the United States. Our Teachers in Practice were examined today so my teaching schedule was altered a bit to ensure their examiner could see all of the lessons he needed to see of those teachers. After my lessons, we had one of our final meetings for the grant proposal. It lasted about three hours. The items discussed in this meeting should allow us to submit the grant proposal very soon which is exciting. I went to the market after this to purchase vegetables and I found a great pineapple. I just rested the rest of the day because the meeting today took a lot of energy from me.

Friday

Today started off on a good note because I wore my purple romper to work 😊 I taught all my lessons and finished all of my other work early so I was able to go home a bit earlier than usual which was nice. I had popcorn and pineapple for lunch and it was a great decision 😊 I took a quick nap before taking out my trash and cutting vegetables for dinner. I then did a workout and some yoga before making veggie stir fry again. I did add a new dish to the meal though, making sweet potato bites. They turned out very good. I was still very tired today, so I ended my night early so I could be ready for my day trip tomorrow!

Saturday

Last night’s sleep did not help me feel rested. There was a funeral happening near my house and it was pouring down rain, so it was a bit too loud for me to get good sleep. I ate breakfast and left my house by 7:30 to go to Maseno. I arrived two hours later and met up with Laura from Cohort 1, Laura from my cohort, Savannah, and Marissa. We went on a hike and it was the perfect distance, ending with a great view overlooking Maseno and the surrounding areas. On our way back down the hike, Marrisa, Savannah, and I walked to Luanda while the Lauras went to Maseno to pick up a bag and take a tuktuk to Luanda. We underestimated how far away Luanda was from our current spot, so my legs were feeling an extra burn from my workout yesterday. We all met up at Oasis in Luanda to have lunch. I had some delicious dengu, rice, and cabbage. When we were done, we made a quick stop at the town supermarket then went our separate ways back to our sites. I got back home around 5PM and did some major stretching before hoping in the shower. I had girl dinner of wine and popcorn while watching another episode of Bridgerton. I also treated myself to a nose peel strip and a facemask. It was a fantastic way to end a Saturday 😊

Sunday

It was another rainy night and morning, so it was a wonderfully cool day to spend around the house. I woke up and did some research for a future trip then made pancakes and tortillas for the week. I then went over to the main house to say hello to Archer and Gladys because they came in late last night. I went back to my house to sweep. While I was sweeping, I watched Nala run into the house with something large in her mouth. She crouched in the bathroom and I could then see that she had brought a mouse inside… For the next 20 minutes, I lectured her that she can kill them if they are inside my house but she can’t be the one to bring them in my house. Thankfully, she got bored with it and I was able to capture it and throw it outside, much to Nala’s disappointment. I took out the trash and took an afternoon nap with Nala snuggles 😊 I heated up dinner before it got dark because the power was still out due to the rain. After dinner, I went to heat up water for my bucket bath but I ran out of gas. Thankfully, Archer and Gladys were still home so I was able to heat up my water in their house to have a nice bucket bath to end my week 😊
