PCV in Kenya: Week 33

Monday

I woke up and my throat felt so much better than yesterday. I still kept my day pretty lowkey because my body was still feeling very sluggish from being sick. I finished working on lesson plans for Term 3 of Biology and Chemistry which will be great for next term. I watched some of “The Mentalist” and some of The Olympics throughout the day. After lunch, I went to the market and found a pair of pants that will be great for work. I purchased vegetables for the week and walked quickly home so I could beat the rain that was rolling in. When I got home, I did some yoga and ate an early dinner before calling it a day.

Tuesday

I woke up early so I could work on finalizing all of the technology literacy workshop presentations for next term. In the afternoon, I headed to school for the closing of Term 2 festivities. I was also notified that I could submit our grant for Peace Corps to review, so that is very exciting for our school. The closing ceremonies went well and we had two guest speakers. They are engineers working on a construction project at the school for a new administration block. They will be working around the area for the next few months so it was good to meet them. I walked home with Laura and was back to my house just before dark. I was able to call Sophie tonight so we could talk about meeting up over break and then I ate dinner.

Wednesday

I spent my morning working on updating my resume. At 10, my neighbor, Edwin, came to my house and we walked to Bartholomew’s home. Bartholomew is one of Edwin’s friends who is deaf. We met a few weeks ago in the market and made plans for me to visit his home compound and his family. It took Edwin and I about an hour to walk to the home, but the weather was overcast and it felt so good to be outside. When we arrived, we were greeted with chai and I met everyone living on the compound. The most talkative was a 4-year-old and he showed me all the kittens they had running around 😊I really enjoyed the time we spent here today. We walked home and I spent the rest of the day continuing to work on my resume. I ate dinner and did a small workout before watching “The Mentalist” and heading to bed. I finished watching all of the episodes of “The Mentalist” and I really enjoyed this series. I will miss the characters 😊

Thursday

Nala woke me up this morning which she usually doesn’t do. She likes to play with the curtains in the morning as the sun starts to come through them. I continued working on my resume this morning and then Sue came over after lunch. She chatted with me while I made tortillas and shakshuka. When she left, I swept the house and took out the trash. I ended the night by talking to my friend Kurt from home and it was great to catch up.

Friday

I had the best girl’s day with Sue today. I left my house around 8AM so I could have a quick breakfast with Sue and her mom. After breakfast, Sue and I went to a funeral for Dorothy and Jack’s mom. I know them from the market and had met their mom before. Sue and I stayed there for about an hour to greet everyone and pay our respects to the family. While here, I met the director of an NGO by their house and I am happy to have this connection so I can get involved with different activities with them while I am on breaks from school. Sue and I then went to the main road so we could catch the bus to Bondo. From here, we got on a different matatu to go to The Garden Bondo. This place was so cute! They had an outdoor stage, outdoor bar with an upstairs seating section, a pool, an indoor conference room, gazebo seating, and cottages. Everything was well priced as well. We sat on the second-floor seating section and ordered pizza and chips masala. The food was great and the views were even better. When we had finished eating, we went back to Bondo. Sue dropped off her phone to be fixed while we did some quick shopping in the supermarket. We were told that the bus back home left at 6 but it actually left at 5:30, so we had to take a longer trip to get back home. Because of this, we were expected to arrive after dark. Thankfully, Costmas’ wife was still working in town and she gave us a ride back to our houses from the main road. Back at the house, I quickly showered and went to sleep super tired from a fun day.

Saturday

I had a leisurely morning before going to Sue’s house to help her put on her phone screen protector. I then headed to Baba Charles’ house and had plans to stay the night so his grandkids could watch some of the movies on my laptop. But, when I arrived, I was informed that Mama Doreen was sick. So, Baba Charles and I just sat outside under the tree and chatted for a few hours. Since I had an unexpectedly free afternoon, I went back to Sue’s house and watched The Olympics with her and her family which was so fun. Back at my house, Archer and Gladys arrived back to home so I spent some time catching up with them before making some dinner. I ended the night by watching The Olympics and I watched the first episode of “Cold Case”.

Sunday

I spent the morning packing for my small trip to Marissa’s house. I had time to make eggs and avocado toast for brunch and it was nice to have a chill morning. I went over to Sue’s house around lunchtime so we could watch more of The Olympics. Her whole family was there again and they let me name their kitten. I named her Rakido which means “Spots” because she has four different colored patches of fur on her body 😊 In the afternoon, I headed back home to workout and have dinner. I ended the week by working on a bracelet and watching The Olympics.
