PCV in Kenya: Week 34

Monday

We did not have school today, so I was able to sleep in which was amazing. I spent the morning working on researching past Term 3 exams for Biology and Chemistry. In the afternoon, I headed to the market to pick up some juice and look around at the clothes. Back at the house, I had lunch with Archer and then went to my house and worked on a bracelet. I then did a workout and ate dinner. The power has been out at my house for two days now, so I am out of water in my house’s inside storage container. So, I collected water from outside and had a bucket bath before calling it a night.

Tuesday

I woke up early so I could make sure I had everything packed and that Nala had everything she needed at Sammy’s house. I then headed out to go to Marissa’s site. The trip to Bungoma town took me about 5 hours. Marissa met me when I arrived and we headed to the gym. This was the first gym I have done a workout in since I got to Kenya! We did an arm workout followed by a cardio/abs workout and it was so nice to have a variety of weights and equipment to use. We then went to the grocery store so we could get everything we needed while we were at her house in the upcoming days.

Wednesday

Marissa and I woke up, had a banana for breakfast, and headed to the gym. After another great workout session, we walked to Tuutis and ate lunch while watching The Olympics. From here, we headed to Spa Dr. Hotel to swim! They have a rooftop pool and it was so fun to spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing here. A tuktuk was able to take us from town to Marissa’s site. We made mushroom stroganoff for dinner then called it a day.

Thursday

We spent the morning around Marissa’s house, making potatoes and veggies for breakfast. We took a walk around her village. It is always nice to see where other volunteers are living and what their communities look like. We picked up some bananas so that we could make banana beignets when we got home. They turned out even better than the last time I made them which is exciting! We spent the afternoon watching The Olympics and we made peanut butter sauce for our leftover noodles from last night for dinner. We ended our Thursday by watching “The Beekeeper” which was pretty good 😊

Friday

Instead of plain potatoes and veggies for breakfast, we had shakshuka and potatoes this morning. Delicious! We spent the morning getting Marissa packed to leave tomorrow. She was not only coming with us to watch my students perform their music, but her parents are coming this weekend as well. Sophie arrived in the afternoon and we headed out for another walk around the village. We got about two minutes away from Marissa’s house when I stepped on something and was in immediate pain. When I looked down on my foot, I saw I had stepped on a broken piece of thick barbed wire. It had gone through my shoe and the side of my foot. Thank goodness it did not go any further interior to my foot or I would’ve been in bad shape. Sophie and Marissa took turns giving me a piggy back ride back to the house because my wound made it difficult to walk. We got my foot all cleaned up and then spent the rest of our night booking flights for our November trip! We then made grilled cheese and tomato soup for dinner while watching The Olympics 😊

Saturday

We all woke up early so we had enough time to eat breakfast and clean Marissa’s house before the tuktuk picked us up at 10AM. Our first stop was The Coffee House outside of Bungoma town. We had some baked goods here while watching the end of the Men’s Olympic Marathon race. We then got on a Bungoma line matatu to Eldoret. We arrived in about two hours and were soon at the guesthouse. My principal and our chaperones were also staying here as well which was great. We settled into our rooms then walked into town. Our first stop was Rhumba Café, the cutest little place. I ordered a veggie burrito with mushroom soup and it was all delicious. From here, we walked to Rupa’s mall for some quick grocery shopping before going to the movie theater where we watched “It Ends With Us”. I hadn’t read the book, so I thought it was a good movie. From here, we went to the Irish Pub in the same mall and I had Guiness for the first time since being in Kenya 😊 The vibes in the pub were great with everyone watching The Olympics. It was a great Saturday.

Sunday

We started our day off at Rhumba Café for breakfast. I had an omelet with fries, coffee, and passion fruit juice. Again, it was all delicious. While we ate our breakfast, we watched the Women’s Olympic Marathon race. After we finished eating and the race ended, we walked to Rupa’s mall and did a bit of shopping. When we were done, we got ice cream at Java House 😊 After our ice cream break, we headed to Moi Girls School to watch my students perform their music ensemble at the 96th Kenya Music Festival, a national competition. They performed so well! There were so many schools there. Our school’s soloist placed 1st in his category while our ensemble placed 3rd in their category. This is so exciting for our students. After watching these performances in the afternoon, Sophie, Marissa, and I headed back to Rupa’s for dinner. On the way, we ran into a Koren bakery called Jowa. We spent a half-hour trying different things and ordering donuts and pastries for breakfast tomorrow. We continued on to dinner at an Indian restaurant in Rupa’s mall and the food was delicious. It was a wonderful way to end the week.
