PCV in Kenya: Week 40
Monday
I spent my morning teaching lessons. In the afternoon, I went to the market and found the cutest overalls! I then went home to change and have a quick lunch before going back to school for Grassroot Soccer (GRS) for our fourth lesson. I think it was one of our best lessons to date. After, I went home and made a quick dinner before going to bed.
Tuesday
I had an early lesson and some much-needed downtime before my last two lessons of the day. I ate lunch then went home and watched “Luckiest Girl Alive” before doing a workout. After this, I had my first meeting with a sleep specialist. I think it was a great meeting. She is the first person I have talked to in my entire life who actually had something new for me to try. I will be attempting to practice sleep restriction for the next few weeks to reset my body. The idea is that you have the same bedtime and wakeup time every day for an entire week. The amount of sleep time should be estimated to be the same amount of sleep you think you are getting. So, even though I might be in bed for about 8 hours, I am probably only getting 5 or 6 hours of sleep, so my new bedtime is midnight with a wakeup of 6AM. I am willing to try anything to help me be a better sleeper so I am excited to see how this goes 😊 After talking to this woman, I watched “House” and read some of my book.
Wednesday
I made pancakes this morning because I do not have a class until the afternoon on Wednesdays. I went to school shortly after eating breakfast so I could finish marking student notebooks before my lesson. Lydiah came to my school shortly after lunch and we had a good meeting about our Volunteer Reporting and Grant (VRG) system. When our meeting finished, the PC driver took me back to my house and I introduced him and Lydiah to Nala 😊 I then did all of my packing for the weekend to ensure I didn’t wear any of the clothes that I want to wear next week. After this, I did a workout and watched “Despicable Me 4” while eating dinner.
Thursday
I started my morning off with my five lessons before lunchtime. I ate lunch and then monitored my biology students as they took their midterm exam. After this, I went home and made dinner before ending the night by watching a few episodes of “Cold Case”.
Friday
I had a long but good day at school. I taught lessons in the morning then went home for lunch. On the way, I grabbed two chapati and ate them with avocado while watching an episode of “Emily in Paris”. I then went back to school for GRS lesson #5. It was another fun lesson 😊 We only got through half of the lesson because the kids (and the coaches) were having a lot of fun playing the lesson game. So, we will finish the second half another day. I got home late and made dinner before making sure I had everything organized before leaving in the morning. I ended the night by doing dishes and watching “Superstore”.
Saturday
I woke up and quickly got everything ready to leave. I dropped Nala and her things off at Sammy’s house then was soon on a matatu towards Kisumu. I met Marissa at the glasses store and helped her pick out a new pair of glasses. We then went to the Peace Corps office to drop off our bags before enjoying the rest of our day. We ate lunch at Lalu’s then went to the movie theater to watch “Wild Robot”. It was a very cute movie and the first 3-D move I’ve watched in Kenya. From here, we picked up Marissa’s glasses then did some grocery shopping. After picking up our bags at the office, we got a tuktuk to take out some cash from the bank before dropping Marissa at the Bungoma line matatus and me at the Kibos line matatus. I was soon at Mama Gladys’ house 😊 I relaxed then made some ramen for dinner. I watched an episode of “Cold Case” to end the night.
Sunday
I started my day off by going to Connect Coffee for an iced mocha. It was delicious and a great start to my day 😊 I then headed over to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kisumu. They have three different services: Luo, English, and Kiswahili. I went to the service in English and felt right at home. It has been about a year since I’ve been to a Lutheran church service and it felt like home 😊 The order of the service is the same and all the congregation was very welcoming. I will be coming back for another visit. After church, I headed over the Naivis for lunch. I got fried rice and enjoyed my meal before heading to the Peace Corps office. At the office, I enjoyed the air conditioning while working on some paperwork and relaxing. I then finished watching the final episode of “Emily in Paris”. When this finished, Mike and the PC driver arrived and we headed to Sosa Cottages. When we arrived, we checked into our cottage. This one is so cute! It is like we are in Hobbiton. As soon as we dropped our things off, we headed to dinner because we were hungry. I had veggie curry, chapati, and ice cream! After dinner, we met with Patrick to go over the plan for the week then called it a night.
