PCV in Kenya: Week 42
Monday
I spent the morning working on some paperwork for the grant and for Grassroot Soccer before heading to work. I did not know that today was school fee collection day. This meant that even though I went to school, we did not teach because there was a collective 20 students in Form 1 (usually there is about 100). I went home a bit early because of this, stopping at the market on the way. I did a workout before making dinner and watching “Abbott Elementary”.
Tuesday
I got to school around 8AM today and again there were not enough students to teach lessons. For my students that were at school, I showed them an episode of “The Magic School Bus” about digestion 😊 I think the kids really enjoyed it, as did I. We then had a meeting about the grant to update all the stakeholders on its progress. I again got to go home earlier than usual which gave me time to sweep and mop my house. It was much needed. I did some yoga before making cabbage stir fry for dinner and watching “Cold Case”. While washing the dishes, I ran out of water because the power was out. So, I had to venture outside in the dark to collect enough water for my bucket bath to end the day.
Wednesday
I taught two lessons today before lunchtime and then Mathews came to visit. Mathews is in charge of Peace Corps social media and communications. We had a fun time discussing things with Peter and taking photos (which my students loved). I then got a ride home in the car which was nice and I tried to introduce Mathews to Nala. She really plays scaredy cat when she meets new people. I warmed up dinner then organized my med kit, setting aside any expired medicines to return to the PCMOs. The power was out again, so I took a bucket bath again before calling it a night.
Thursday
I had a busy but good day today. Rachel came by this morning to help me out with laundry and I was at school by 8:30AM. I taught lessons until lunchtime then headed to the market. I came back to school for our teacher technology workshop and GRS lesson. I got home around 6PM, made shakshuka for dinner and called it a night.
Friday
I had a good morning of lessons then went home to eat lunch and rest before going back to school for our GRS lesson. When I got back home again, I warmed up dinner and watched “Abbott Elementary” before calling it a night.
Saturday
Today was a smooth day from start to finish. I left my house just after 7AM and ran into Archer at the house. He was just staying the night to oversee some work happening on his farm. He was also leaving at the same time so was able to drive me and Lauren to Bondo where we got a matatu to Siaya. From here, we met up with Madi and got another car to Little Gem. We met a bunch of other Peace Corps volunteers and enjoyed a pool day 😊 It was so nice to see everyone. I stayed at Sav’s house and we had yummy pasta for dinner.
Sunday
I woke up and watched “The Joker” in preparation for watching the second movie this afternoon. We had bananas and coffee for breakfast. I then got on a matatu for Kisumu. For some reason, this ride felt really long even though it took the expected two hours. Once in Kisumu, I headed to Megacity to watch my movie. It turns out that I was looking at the Saturday movie times, not the Sunday movie times ☹ So, I settled for watching the new Transformers movie. It was actually pretty good. It was kind of the backstory for Optimus Prime and Megatron. I then went to the Peace Corps office where I watched “Saw” in the comfort of the air conditioning in the Volunteer Resource Center. I had downloaded the movie at my house but have been too scared to watch it in my house alone lol. I actually really liked this movie! It wasn’t as scary as I thought it was going to be. A driver soon came to take us to Sosa. I dropped my things off in the room then went to dinner. I have now stayed in all of the different types of rooms they offer at Sosa: village, cottage, and room. For dinner, I ate vegetable curry, chapati, and fruit. Patrick and I then planned for our morning session before calling it a night.
